As the popularity of live tooling in turning centers increases, so does the need for today’s CNC lathe machinists to become experts in CNC milling as well as CNC turning. Milling in a lathe however presents its own unique challenges. One of the challenges is the appropriate application of coolant to the cutting zones of live tooling. Machinists have found thermal shock and chip recutting to be a reoccurring threat to machine tool performance. KoolBlast coolant fed collars have greatly reduced that threat.
Thermal shock occurs when a rotating tool, such as an end mill, generates intense heat as it engages material and then disengages the material while rotating into a flood of coolant. Heat, by itself, does not necessarily damage the thin razor sharp cutting edges, but the repeated shock of the extreme temperature change thousands of time per minute often will. Even if that coolant is pouring in from above and gravity washes it into the cutting zone, the intense heat can produce steam at the point of work piece contact. This steam can produce a barrier that never allows the coolant to properly remove the heat.
The recutting of chips is also very problematic. Imagine an end mill positioned against a work piece as it begins to cut. Now imagine what would happen if a piece of shim stock found its way between the work piece and the end mill. As the end mill rotates, each flute would pull the shim stock into the cutting zone. Since the shim stock is sliding rather than solid like the work piece, it becomes pinched and dragged through the work zone by the cutting edges of the end mill. This pinching creates intense pressure that otherwise would not occur in a clean cutting situation. This is similar to what occurs when chips are not evacuated from the cutting zone.
KoolBlast coolant fed collars are designed to distribute an intense, constant flow of coolant 360 degrees around live CNC lathe tools such as end mills. Milling applications in CNC turning centers are notorious for blind cavity work and obstructed coolant flow. The KoolBlast collar remains stationary as its coolant lubricated bearing bronze bushing floats on the shank of a live end mill. It is held in place by a floating coolant line plumbed into an auxiliary coolant port. The collar directs the coolant right down the flutes of the end mill without interruption. This powerful 360 degree coverage greatly reduces the thermal shock and blasts the damaging chips out of the work zone. KoolBlast coolant fed collars have often proven to be the most cost effective solution to some of the biggest turning center challenges.
