Coolant Coverage and Chip Control… the KoolBlast Advantage in CNC Lathe Sleeves
Chip control is often times the most important (yet overlooked) factor regarding tool failure in blind hole CNC turning operations. If your carbide cutting edge is broken instead of worn or tool failure occurs unpredictably, then you may have a chip control issue. Some coolant application methods actually push the chips into the bottom of blind holes; creating a potential disaster for the machine tool. Other systems simply are not designed to allow enough volume of coolant flow to remove the chips. Some are not even maintaining coolant contact as the lathe tool penetrates the bore. This can cause the chip to become hotter and more flexible, thus creating a long stringy problematic chip.
The unique design of KoolBlast's lathe tool holder bushings allows for optimal coolant coverage as well as chip evacuation. The coolant is applied tightly around the entire circumference of the shank of the turning tool. This creates a concentrated high volume flow of coolant that creates a shield around the machine tool, yet maintains room within the bore for coolant to deflect from the bottom and back flush the chips out. Instead of a gurgling bath of coolant at the face of the work piece, KoolBlast allows for a continuous flow of coolant down to the bottom of the bore and back out.
Since chip build-up in the bottom of the hole can cause catastrophic failures as well as unpredictable processes, KoolBlast customers are seeing excellent returns on investment. Even if the chips do not cause tool failure, they can often grind between the work piece and boring bar shank causing poor finishes and variations in bore size. KoolBlast lathe bushings excel by flushing those chips out of the bore and maintaining coolant contact with the cutting edge. In turn, KoolBlast customers are realizing savings in reduced carbide consumption, reduced tool breakage, increased job feasibility and increased process reliability. All of these factors lead to an overall increase in production work flow.
